VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The government’s projected subsidy bill for diesel has surged to around €75 million for 2026, more than double the €30 million forecast just three months earlier, Finance Minister Clyde Caruana has warned.
Caruana said the continued rise in diesel prices had left the government with “no end in sight” to the growing subsidy burden.
The increase is raising concerns ahead of next year’s Budget, as the government seeks to keep energy prices stable while maintaining the fiscal deficit below 3% of GDP.
Earlier this year, the government had set aside a €250 million buffer for energy subsidies.
