BASEL (SWITZERLAND) (ITALPRESS) – Stephan Lichtsteiner is no longer the coach of Basel. The former Juventus and Lazio full-back has been sacked following an underwhelming start to the league season: after seven rounds of the Swiss Super League, Basel have recorded three wins, one draw and three defeats, all of them at home.
The recent losses at St. Jakob-Park against Lugano (3-1) and Sion (2-1) were particularly decisive.
Lichtsteiner, 42, was appointed Basel head coach at the end of January, replacing Ludovic Magnin, on a contract running until 2029. Following an already difficult final part of last season, the club had been expecting a turnaround that failed to materialise.
Alongside the former Bianconeri player, assistant coach Mario Cantaluppi is also leaving the club with immediate effect. The team has been placed under the interim management of assistant coach Luigi Nocentini.
