Maltese holidaymakers among EU’s biggest spenders

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Maltese residents are among the European Union’s biggest holiday spenders, according to Eurostat figures for 2024.

Residents of Malta spent an average of €131 per night on tourism trips, placing the country fifth among EU member states included in the ranking.

The figure is well above the EU average of €97 per night.

Luxembourg topped the ranking, with residents spending an average of €176 per night, followed by Austria on €170.

Sweden ranked third at €140, while Ireland was fourth at €133. Malta followed in fifth place at €131.

At the opposite end of the scale, Greek residents spent the least, averaging €47 per night.

They were followed by residents of Czechia at €55, Poland at €57 and Lithuania at €59.

The figures measure spending by residents while travelling, rather than expenditure by foreign tourists visiting each country.

The expenditure covers money spent before or during a trip, including transport, accommodation, restaurants and activities.

Durable and valuable goods are excluded from the calculation.
