LIMA (PERU) (ITALPRESS) – Peru’s new government is committed to supporting the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its sovereignty over the southern provinces.
This was revealed during a meeting between Peruvian President-elect Keiko Fujimori and Moroccan Ambassador to Peru Amine Chaoudri, according to the Moroccan website Yabiladi. According to Fujimori’s office, the meeting was an opportunity to reaffirm the new Peruvian government’s desire to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation with Morocco.
Fujimori also emphasized his full commitment to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which establishes the autonomy initiative as the basis for reaching a definitive solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
Yabiladi notes that in August 2022, Peru announced, in a statement from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its withdrawal of recognition of the Sahrawi Republic. However, then-president Pedro Castillo, a few weeks later, commemorated the first anniversary of the resumption of relations between his country and the Polisario Front with a post. Peru decided in September 2023 to permanently sever relations with the Polisario.
