Malta backs US-Iran deal, calls for Middle East peace

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta has welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran that ended hostilities between the two countries and led to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Fearne expressed support for what he described as a diplomatic success. Fearne said the agreement was crucial for regional stability.

“Malta recognises that this is now an opportunity to achieve, instead of an escalation of wars, an escalation of peace across the entire Middle East,” he said.

Fearne also urged the European Union to take a more active role in Palestinian state-building efforts. He stressed the importance of supporting reforms within the Palestinian Authority to promote long-term stability.

Meanwhile, Fearne highlighted concerns over the presence of Russia’s “Shadow Fleet” in the Mediterranean, saying action against the unregulated vessels was important for the safety of EU Mediterranean states. However, he noted that any comprehensive maritime ban would require broader international cooperation, particularly from G7 countries.
