VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Prime Minister Robert Abela outlined Malta’s long-term strategy to establish itself as a leading European centre for MedTech, life sciences and digital health during the opening of MedTech World Malta 2025. The plan forms part of the Malta Vision 2050 framework.
The annual event has drawn more than 2,000 delegates, including global experts, startups, investors and government officials from the US, UK, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Abela highlighted new national incentives designed to support innovators and investors, backed by a regulatory framework that encourages emerging technologies while safeguarding ethics, safety and patient welfare.
He said true innovation depends on strong cooperation between government, academia, industry and healthcare providers. Institutions such as Malta Enterprise, the Malta Life Sciences Park, the University of Malta and the Health Ministry are working together to nurture ideas and expand their global reach.
Malta is also strengthening links with international research institutions in fields including biotechnology, AI, MedTech engineering and digital health. Local hospitals and clinics are already deploying AI diagnostics, telehealth, robotics and digital platforms, showcasing Malta’s agility as a testbed for real-world data solutions.
Growing collaborations between the University of Malta, Mater Dei Hospital and private companies are helping turn research into practical healthcare tools. Investor interest—particularly in oncology research and AI-driven diagnostics—is further boosting Malta’s reputation for high-value innovation.
Economy Minister Silvio Schembri told delegates that years of investment in digital infrastructure and training have laid the foundations for MedTech as a new economic niche, transforming Malta into a trusted location for advanced health technology and research.
This year’s event features global leaders including Houston Methodist, MedTech Innovator, Dubai Science Park, Johnson & Johnson, Boston Scientific, Philips, BlackRock and Malta Enterprise.
