UN Security Council recongnises Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara

NEW YORK (USA) (ITALPRESS) – The United Nations Security Council, through Resolution No. 2797, has officially recognised Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and endorsed the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 as the basis for a definitive political solution. The vote, adopted in New York, marks a historic turning point. Eleven members voted in favour, while three—Russia, China, and Pakistan—abstained. Algeria was the only country not to participate, underscoring the isolation of its position. The resolution extends the mandate of MINURSO (the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) until October 2026, with a mandatory strategic review scheduled in six months to assess the future of the mission. It reiterates the call for Algeria, as the host country for refugees, to conduct a census of the population in the Tindouf camps and urges respect for the ceasefire directed at the Polisario Front. The resolution invites all parties—Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario—to engage constructively in negotiations.
