VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – MaltaPost, together with other European postal operators under PostEurop, has warned that shipments of goods to the United States may face severe disruption once new US customs regulations come into effect on 29 August. Sweden’s PostNord and Norway’s Posten Bring announced they will pause shipments to the US ahead of the regulation’s start, raising fears of wider disruptions across Europe.
The US executive order will abolish the current $800 duty-free threshold, meaning all imports will be subject to customs duties regardless of value or origin. The change overturns long-standing international postal rules overseen by the Universal Postal Union. PostEurop said the measure could have major consequences for postal companies, private senders, and businesses relying on parcel deliveries to the US. Concerns remain over how duties will be collected, what data needs to be submitted, and how postal operators will coordinate with US Customs.
With technical details only published on 15 August, operators have little time to adapt. The association cautioned that, without clear processes, members might be forced to restrict or suspend goods shipments to the US temporarily. PostEurop stressed that its members are working with national authorities to safeguard services and maintain the Universal Postal Service.
