VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Two flights bound for Malta were diverted to Palermo on Saturday night after a violent storm swept across the islands, bringing heavy rain, hail, and widespread lightning. KM Malta Airlines flight KM103 from London and Ryanair’s FR8853, also from London, were both forced to land in Sicily due to the intense weather. Meanwhile, Ryanair’s FR1409 from Seville managed to touch down in Malta at 2:28am, nearly 100 minutes behind schedule. The storm also caused power outages in several localities.
By early Sunday, the national energy provider Enemalta was still working to restore electricity in the northern part of the island. Residents across Malta reported torrential rain and dramatic lightning strikes. Earlier on Saturday, an unexpected hailstorm pelted parts of the island, surprising many after months of hot, dry weather. The Meteorological Office issued a yellow warning for isolated thunderstorms and gusty rain, with the possibility of more hail showers throughout Sunday. Despite the unsettled weather, temperatures are forecast to climb to 30°C, with humidity pushing the “real feel” to 32°C. Authorities are urging caution as unstable conditions persist.
