Malta, Insurers urge reforms after fatal road crashes

VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – In the wake of a deadly weekend that claimed three lives in separate road accidents, the Opposition and the Insurance Association Malta have issued strong calls for urgent reforms to tackle dangerous driving.

The Insurance Association backed emergency doctor Jonathan Joslin’s call for random alcohol and drug testing of motorists, calling the lack of legal provisions a “critical gap” in enforcement.

“The situation remains a cause for concern,” it said, pointing to 2022 data showing breathalysers were used in only 3% of serious crashes.

The association, which has long advocated for stricter laws, urged authorities to invest in police training, equipment, and consistent roadside checks—particularly following serious incidents.
