VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Anthony Spiteri Debono, husband of President Myriam Spiteri Debono, passed away this morning due to health complications, the Office of the Presidency confirmed.
In an official statement, the Office said, “At this difficult time, the Office of the Presidency requests that the privacy of the family be respected.”
Spiteri Debono, a notary by profession, is survived by his wife, three children—Elena, George, and Maria Kristina—and four grandchildren: Alexandra, Paul, Pippa, and Beppe.
Following his wife’s appointment as President earlier this year, Spiteri Debono had remarked that life had become more hectic but noted he was always ready to provide support.
Tributes poured in from across the political and religious spectrum.
Prime Minister Robert Abela described him as “a gentleman” whose “humility stood out.” He praised Spiteri Debono’s quiet strength, saying he was a man “of great support, particularly to his wife and family.”
Opposition leader Bernard Grech called him “a truly authentic, humble, and gentle man,” recalling their shared time studying law.
Speaker of the House Anġlu Farrugia expressed “deepest sorrow” on behalf of Parliament, honouring Spiteri Debono as “a great gentleman.”
Archbishop Charles Scicluna also offered condolences, saying, “May he rest in peace.”
