VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The film industry is becoming a powerful engine for Malta’s economy, creating jobs and attracting substantial foreign investment. This was the central theme at a national conference organised by the Malta Film Commission at Fort Ricasoli, aimed at building a strong, inclusive, and sustainable sector.
Government officials, creative industry leaders, educators, and business representatives gathered to explore how Malta can further develop its film industry to benefit the entire population—from technicians to producers—while continuing to appeal to international filmmakers.
Industry expert Dustin Chodorowicz highlighted Malta’s potential, stating that small countries can carve out a unique niche in the global film sector. He praised Malta’s stable economy and its ability to invest in both physical infrastructure and skilled workers, making it an attractive filming destination.
Film Commissioner Johann Grech emphasised the industry’s positive economic impact, noting that Malta is now consistently selected for international productions. Grech also stressed the importance of ongoing training, with 75% of Maltese film workers upgrading their skills through programmes funded by a portion of the cash rebate offered to foreign productions.
Arts Minister Owen Bonnici underlined the sector’s resilience, especially in the face of challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. He revealed that Malta currently hosts eight active productions and has attracted 169 productions in recent years, generating over €635 million in investment, including major Hollywood projects.
