Automotive Industry in Morocco reaches record one million units

RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – Morocco is taking a new step in its quest to become a global automotive hub, reaching one million units per year. The Stellantis plant expansion was inaugurated yesterday in Kenitra, the result of a total investment of €1.2 billion. The expansion is expected to create 3,100 direct jobs and double the site’s production capacity.

According to MAP news agency, the ceremony was attended by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, who emphasized that the project embodies “the ambitions of the Kingdom’s new Investment Charter and Industrial Policies under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI,” aiming to strengthen domestic production, local integration, and the competitiveness of the economic ecosystem.

The investment, including €702 million for suppliers, will increase production capacity to over 200,000 vehicles per year by 2030, with an estimated 75% local integration rate. “This expansion,” Akhannouch added, “confirms international investors’ confidence in Morocco’s industrial potential and will help create skilled jobs for young people.”

According to Minister of Industry and Trade, Riyadh Mezzour, the new plant consolidates the country’s position as a leading industrial hub, capable of producing over one million vehicles annually.

“This is an exceptional partnership that strengthens our industrial and technological sovereignty,” Mezzour stated, emphasizing how the project reflects “the mutual trust and shared ambition” between Morocco and the Stellantis group. Samir Cherfan, Stellantis’ Director of Operations for the Middle East and Africa, noted that the Kenitra plant has significantly exceeded the objectives set in the framework agreement signed in 2016. The first phase of the plant, inaugurated in 2019, reached 200,000 vehicles per year by the end of 2020, three years ahead of schedule.

In addition to the capacity increase, Stellantis has started production of mild hybrid (MHEV) engines in Kenitra, with an assembly line already operational since May 2025 and a second phase of mechanical processing scheduled for November 2026. Production of micromobility vehicles—such as the Citroën Ami, Opel Rocks-e, and Fiat Topolino—is also expected to increase to 70,000 units per year, along with new three-wheel electric vehicles and charging stations, with a capacity of 204,000 charging stations. The event was also attended by the Ministers of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment, and Skills, Younes Sekkouri, and of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh. With this expansion and new projects, Morocco aims to consolidate its role as a competitive and resilient global automotive hub, strongly promoting Made in Morocco and increasing industrial autonomy.
